Biography
John McDermott is The Economist‘s Chief Africa Correspondent, based in Johannesburg, but reporting across the continent. He is the winner of journalism awards including the Medical Journalists’ Association prize for feature writing and, most recently, the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) award for international reporting.
Before joining The Economist in 2016, he was a journalist with the Financial Times, which he joined in 2010. In a former life Mr. McDermott was a policy adviser in the prime minister’s strategy and policy units from 2008-10. He is a graduate of the London School of Economics and Harvard University, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.
