An alumnus of Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, Basak completed his BFA and MFA in and respectively. He was interested in depicting the contradictions of contemporary times, the struggle to survive, and life in the rural hinterlands. He employed pop art in his works and was also influenced by films, billboards and advertisements. He described his work as a 'thin world created out of various shapes of varied colours and textures.' (). In the present lot, we can see the amalgamation of all his influences and also see the surrealist elements that he expertly deployed. The tiger is much larger than the amorphous figure, and this illustrates his desire to create an ambiguous world, where there are true 'false' realities or false 'true' realities.
